Trivia[]

  1. The day after X (2022)'s South by Southwest premiere, writer/director Ti West revealed during preproduction for this film, he had used his time during a mandatory two-week quarantine in his hotel to write a prequel, "Pearl". As the production for "X" wrapped, and also because the sets were already constructed, he asked star Mia Goth if she wished to remain in New Zealand and film "Pearl", which she readily accepted. The prequel is due for release later in 2022.
  2. Shot on location in New Zealand.
  3. There was an actual adult film called Farmer's Daughters (1976) which is infamous because it starred future acclaimed mainstream writer and actor Spalding Gray.
  4. Fifth horror film for Mia Goth following A Cure for Wellness (2016), The Secret of Marrowbone (2017), High Life (2018) and Suspiria (2018).
  5. Horror film debut of Kid Cudi.
  6. Fourth horror film feature of Jenna Ortega following The Babysitter: Killer Queen (2020), Studio 666 (2022) and Scream (2022).
  7. The title of the film, "X", refers to the X rating used by the MPAA from 1968-1990 and indicated that a film with that certificate was only suitable for an audience 16 or older. The idea behind it was that, unlike the other certificates, X would not be trademarked, and would allow filmmakers to release their film in theaters without needing to submit it to the MPAA for an age certificate. Notable films that were originally released with an X rating included "A Clockwork Orange", "Fritz The Cat", "Last Tango In Paris", "Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song" and "Midnight Cowboys". In the '70s, the porn industry would end up exploiting the X rating's lack of a trademark by releasing pornos in theaters with that same rating. Eventually, X became more associated with porn, and more and more theaters started refusing to show films with an X rating, forcing actual films to be censored to receive an R rating. In 1990, the MPAA discontinued the X rating and replaced it with NC-17. Unlike X, NC-17 was trademarked and could not be self-applied, but it still meant that most theaters would not show films with the rating, resulting in censorship, once again.
  8. Third slasher horror film of Brittany Snow following Prom Night (2008) and Would You Rather (2012).
  9. Second A24 pictures slasher horror film following Green Room (2015).
  10. Ti West has previously collaborated and starred in the 2011 smash hit slasher horror film You're Next, which oversaw his character alongside a group of others contending with killers at a secluded home and its property.
  11. Shares the title and main theatrical poster of Australian horror film X: Night of Vengeance (2011).
  12. Third horror film of Martin Henderson: following The Ring (2002) and The Strangers: Prey at Night (2018).
  13. Fifth theatrically released horror film written and directed by Ti West following The Roost (2005), The House of the Devil (2009), The Innkeepers (2011) and The Sacrament (2013).
