Trivia[]

  1. At the insistence of Tom Cruise, there are no green screen or CGI aerial shots in the film, and even the close up cockpit shots are taken during real in-flight sequences. This meant that much of the cast had to undergo extensive G-force training sessions, to withstand the physical demands of the G-force pressures during flights.
  2. The World War II P-51 Mustang seen in this movie is actually Tom Cruise's own airplane, him being an accomplished pilot in real life.
  3. Tom Cruise's involvement in this movie was predicated on the condition that real aircraft be used in the aerial sequences, not CGI.
  4. It was unknown if Val Kilmer was going to be in this movie due to his battle with throat cancer. However, as of January 2020, he is confirmed to reprise his role as Tom "Iceman" Kazansky.
  5. The shirtless beach football montage had to be shot twice because Tom Cruise did not find the first version good enough. The re-shoot placed additional pressure on the actors to get their ripped bodies back to re-shoot the scene. Cast member Glen Powell recounted, "We shot it and that night we all went out for milkshakes and tater tots. Just like splurge and everybody grabbed a beer. And a week later Tom's like, "We gotta shoot it again. It wasn't good enough. We're gonna shoot it again. And then everybody's back in the gym again, day and night." The sequence is being used very heavily to promote the movie after a similar scene in the original film became iconic and an audience favorite.
  6. Dedicated to the memory of original Top Gun (1986) director Tony Scott, who was in the process of developing a version of this sequel before his death.
  7. Tom Cruise is now older than Tom Skerritt was when he played Viper in the original Top Gun (1986).
  8. Miles Teller was cast in the role of Goose's son, beating out the likes of Nicholas Hoult and Glen Powell. All three were flown to the home of Tom Cruise, the star of this movie, for chemistry tests. Powell was later cast in this movie in a role beefed up for him, having impressed Cruise, producer Jerry Bruckheimer, as well as executives at Paramount Pictures and Skydance with his auditions.
  9. One of the longest time, 36 years, between a film and its sequel in the movie history.
  10. Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer are the only actors to reprise their roles from the original Top Gun (1986).
  11. It was rumored that the plot would be centered around drone warfare before Tom Cruise confirmed this sequel would be going back to fighter jets. Drones will still serve some point of the plot, however.
  12. Jennifer Connelly has been cast as Penny Benjamin. In the original Top Gun (1986), that character is referenced by Goose as being the daughter of an Admiral that Maverick had dated. As of the 1986 version, Connelly was a minor aged 16. Connelly is 8 years younger than Tom Cruise.
