Film Deaths[]

  • Photographing Fairies (1997) [Charles Castle]: Executed by hanging; after the drop, he is shown reunited with his wife Rachel Shelley in the afterlife.
  • Onegin (1999) [Vladimir Lensky]: Shot in the head by Ralph Fiennes during a duel.
  • The Great Gatsby (2000) [Jay Gatsby]: Toby opens his eyes from a dream while floating in his pool, hearing the sound of his telephone ringing. He looks up over his feet to see William Camp, who shoots Toby in the heart and kills him. William then proceeds to shoot himself, in the head. Toby's and William's corpses are then laid out next to each other, where they are later seen by Paul Rudd.
  • Die Another Day (2002) [Gustav Graves]: Sucked into the engine of an airplane after Pierce Brosnan turns on Toby's suit which causes electricity, forcing him to let go of the airplane door. This character was previously played by Will Yun Lee.
  • Dark Corners (2006) [Dr. Woodleigh]: Stabbed to death off-screen by Christien Anhole after Christien finds Toby standing over Thora Birch's body; we only see Christien attacking after knocking Toby to the floor behind the bed.
  • Severance (2006) [Harris]: Decapitated by a guerrilla while Toby is lying on the ground after a bus accident. As explained, when his head is cut off, his brain functions are still intact and makes facial expression seconds before he dies (Played for comical effect).
  • 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi (2016) [Glen 'Bub' Doherty]: Killed in an explosion when a mortar lands right next to him.

Television Deaths[]

  • Napoleon (2002) [Alexander I of Russia]: Dies off-screen of typhus.
  • Sharpe's Challenge (2006) [General William Dodd]: Disarmed, slashed across the stomach before he is then stabbed through the chest with a sword by Sean Bean at the conclusion of their duel. Sean pins Toby to divan in the palace, before twisting to sword to ensure that Toby had an agonising death.
  • The Wild West: Custer's Last Stand (2007) [George Armstrong Custer]: Shot in the stomach and then the head during the Battle of the Little Bighorn.
  • And Then There Were None (2015; mini-series) [Dr. Edward Armstrong]: Pushed off a cliff and into the water below off-screen by Charles Dance, resulting in either Toby dying upon impact, or drowning in the water. Toby's body is later discovered by Aidan Turner and Maeve Dermody after the tide brings it in.
  • Batman: Caped Crusader: Night Ride (2024; animated) [Jim Craddock/Gentleman Ghost]: Hanged off-screen centuries before the events of the episode, he returns as a ghost, possessing Alfred (Jason Watkins), before Batman (Hamish Linklater) is able to complete a ritual, burning his ghostly form and sealing his spirit away inside a vial.
