- The preliminary title was originally Sundowning after the neurological phenomenon associated with increased confusion and restlessness in patients with delirium or some form of dementia that occur during the afternoon and evening.
- Originally intended more as an art-house picture than a outright horror with a second cut going in the opposite direction becoming a comedy. Shyamalan eventually struck a middle balance and cut the film as a thriller, which, according to him, helped tie the different elements together as they "could stay in service of the movie".
