During the depression era A drifter arrives in a rural Californian diner for a meal, only to end up working for it's owners older Greek immigrant Nick Papadakis and his femme fatale wife Cora, who soon sets about luring her new employee into a murder plot

- It is the fourth adaptation of the 1934 novel by James M. Cain
- The original fim's star, Lana Turner, expressed her disapproval of the remake. She especially disliked how the studio "turned it into such pornographic trash", and admitted that although she did not watch the remake, she had seen advertisements and blurbs on television that made her sick
