The film was shot over several years and was intended to be Orson Welles' Hollywood comeback until 1976. Welles continued to intermittently work on the project into the 1980s until his death in 1985. It remained unfinished until Netflix released a final edit and it hold the record for the longest production time in history (48 years to be exact).
