Trivia[]
- Stephen King says that he was genuinely frightened by this adaption of his novella. The film’s director Frank Darabont described that as the happiest moment of his career.
- Laurie Holden, Jeffrey DeMunn, Melissa McBride, Sam Witwer and Juan Gabriel Pareja would all later appear in the AMC horror apocalypse television series The Walking Dead (2010-2022). Additionally Frank Darabont also the developer and the executive producer for the first two seasons of the show.
- Stephen King got the idea for the source novel when he was in a Maine market. When he noticed the front window was made of plate glass, he wondered what would happen if giant insects flew into it.
- Frank Darabont agreed to make the film with Dimension only under the condition that no matter what, they wouldn't change the scripted ending. They agreed.
- Frank Darabont wanted Thomas Jane to play Rick Grimes on The Walking Dead (2010-2022) after they worked together on this film. Unfortunately Andrew Lincoln got the role of Rick Grimes instead.
- Despite the setting in Maine, the film was shot entirely in Louisiana and Texas. To Frank Darabont's delight, Stephen King could not distinguish it from Maine when watching the film.
- Director Frank Darabont originally wanted the film shown in black and white. The two-disc DVD/Blu-ray release contains Darabont's black-and-white version on the second disc.
- The earthquake scene included a surprise in the form of a "huge earthquake rumble" recording that they played via large bass speakers without warning the cast in advance. "Everybody jumped."
- This is Thomas Jane's second Stephen King movie. The first was in Dreamcatcher.
- The film was shot in 37 days.
