Plot Summary[]

A young girl (Emily Browning) is institutionalized by her abusive stepfather. Retreating to an alternative reality as a coping strategy, she envisions a plan which will help her escape from the mental facility.

  1. Jena Malone was so upset by the film's poor reception that she nearly quit acting.
  2. Scott Glenn's role as Wise Man was written specifically for him.
  3. Despite playing the lead character, Emily Browning does not have a line of dialogue until about eighteen minutes into the film.
  4. First film directed by Zack Snyder that is not an adaptation. However, the movie features motifs from Lewis Carroll's novel "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland".
  5. Zack Snyder's first live action film to not receive an R rating in the U.S. until the Extended Cut came out, which received the R rating.
  6. Emily Browning sang three of the songs featured in the film: "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" at the beginning of the movie; "Asleep" which plays while Babydoll is crying in the bathroom; and she is featured on the track "Where is My Mind?" by Yoav.
  7. Each of the lead girls had to undergo strict physical training which involved doing dead-lifts up to 96 kilograms several months before shooting. Vanessa Hudgens called that period "tormenting" and she broke down several times. In scenes where she's seen crying, she actually brought out moments from those sessions.
