Plot Synopsis[]

A prequel to “X” (2022). Set in 1918, the film will focus on Mia Goth’s character Pearl during World War I.

  1. Was secretly filmed in conjunction with X (2022). 'Pearl' serves as that film's prequel, showing the character's early life in 1918 decades before the events of 'X'.
  2. A trailer was shown at the end of theatrical screenings of X (2022), in certain territories.
  3. Pearl's climactic monologue goes for 7 minutes 57 seconds, consists of seventeen shots, and the last shot goes for 5 minutes 36 seconds.
  4. Tandi Wright, who plays Pearl's mother, was the intimacy coordinator on X (2022) and was offered the role of Ruth as the shoot on the first film was wrapping up. According to Ti West, she learned German for the role in a hurry and became so convincing in her accent that she fooled two German members of the crew.
  5. Ti West and Mia Goth collaborated on the script via FaceTime during a mandatory 2-week quarantine (due to the COVID-19 pandemic) in New Zealand prior to filming X (2022). They had only hoped A24 would agree to make the film. Fortunately, the project was green-lit before filming began on X.
  6. To prepare for the tone of this movie, director/co-writer Ti West suggested that Mia Goth (Pearl) watch What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962) and The Wizard of Oz (1939).
  7. The pornographic film shown to Pearl is A Free Ride (1915), a real vintage 'stag' film. The film's production is the subject of some debate: It surfaced in the 1970s and was at one point sold by a shady distributor as a hardcore D.W. Griffith from 1915, while silent film historian Kevin Brownlow has posited that it was made in the early 1920s.
  8. According to Ti West, the homeowners of the house the film is set in enjoyed the makeover of the house and barn that production gave so much that they presumably have not changed it.
  9. First screenwriting and producing credits for lead actor Mia Goth.
  10. A teaser for the sequel to X (2022) was shown at the end of the credits in some territories, titled "MaXXXine (2024)". The sequel will be set in the 1980s.
  11. Originally meant to be filmed in black and white, but A24 were against it, so it was made in extremely vivid color. Mia Goth claims another reason for the switch from black and white to bright colors was that the team felt like films being made in that way had "become its own thing", and she and Ti West wanted to do something "different and unique".
  12. Pearl's alligator is named Theda after Theda Bara, who was an American silent film actress, and one of cinema's earliest sex symbols. Viewers may notice a poster of Theda Bara is displayed on the exterior of the picture house that Pearl regularly frequents.
