Monster Hunter (2020)

Director: Paul W.S. Anderson

Plot[]

When Lt. Artemis and her loyal soldiers are transported to a new world, they engage in a desperate battle for survival against enormous enemies with incredible powers. Feature film based on the video game by Capcom.

Trivia[]

  1. T.I. says that his youngest son convinced him to hop on board, because he is a fan of the video games.
  2. Milla Jovovich's seventh movie based on a videogame franchise.
  3. The premise of the movie involves an Alpha Team (led by Milla Jovovich) looking for their colleagues of Bravo Team who have gone missing under suspicious circumstances. Alpha Team subsequently ends up in a place full of monsters where they find most of their Bravo Team colleagues already dead. This is almost the exact same premise as the classic video game Resident Evil (1996), with soldiers replacing a special police team, insectoid monsters substituting for zombies, and a parallel world instead of an old mansion. Paul W.S. Anderson, screenwriter/directer of Monster Hunter, also wrote and directed Jovovich in Resident Evil (2002), as well as the last three installments of Resident Evil, which were big screen adaptations of the eponymous game series. Monster Hunter is also an adaptation of a popular game series that started with Monster Hunter (2004).
  4. Milla Jovovich plays a character named Artemis, while Tony Jaa is credited as 'The Hunter'. Artemis is the ancient Greek goddess of the hunt.
  5. Not long after its theatrical release in China, the film was pulled from cinemas and subsequently banned, because a joke in the film was deemed insulting ("What are my knees? What kind of knees are these? Chi-knees"). This caused the film to be review bombed on several platforms, and it even received accusations of racism. Curiously, the game Monster Hunter: World (2018) received thousands of negative reviews as well within 48 hours, which were not aimed at the game itself, but on the film. Constantin Film later apologized for that scene.
