- Body and Soul (1925) [Isabelle]: Dies of an unspecified illness, with her mother (Julia Theresa Russell) by her bedside. Most of the movie (including Mercedes’ death) later turn out to be Julia’s dream sequence, Mercedes survives in reality. (In director Oscar Micheaux’ original cut, her death was real; he had to re-edit the film to rewrite the ending to appease the censor board).
