King of the Zombies (1941)

Director: Jean Yarbrough

Three travelers, stranded on a small island by a plane crash, are "rescued" by a mysterious doctor who offers them shelter. They soon find themselves entangled in voodoo rituals, espionage, and murder. Nominated for an Academy Award for its musical score, making this low-budget horror B-movie one of the more unusual nominees in Oscar history. (Note: The "zombies" in this movie are actually living people under hypnosis, rather than the resurrected dead; consequently, the actors playing the "zombies" are not listed among the films' deaths below.)
