Trivia[]
- Jesse Plemons had to turn down the lead role in Nope (2022) in order to star in this movie, as they were shooting at the same time.
- Robert De Niro was rumored to be one of the leads in the project since 2017 until it was finally confirmed on Instagram by Martin Scorsese on July 29th, 2019 that De Niro would portray William Hale in the film.
- William Hale (who will be played by Robert DeNiro) was about 45 when the Osage murders began. DeNiro is nearly 80 years old.
- Brendan Fraser's casting in a supporting role was met with widespread positive support online, due to Fraser's long history of physical and professional hardships.
- Martin Scorsese said that when he read David Grann's book "Killers of the Flower Moon," he knew that he had to make it into a movie. Scorsese spent several hours together with Chief Standing Bear to convince the Osage Nation to help with the filming.
- George Clooney had expressed interest in directing a film adaptation of David Grann's non-fiction book, "Killers of the Flower Moon" prior to Martin Scorsese coming aboard as director.
- Screenwriter Eric Roth stated that Leonardo DiCaprio insisted that his original screenplay be rewritten. In the original script prior to production, DiCaprio was to star as Tom White, the heroic FBI agent who traveled to the Osage Nation and solved a series of murders. This original script was more akin to a detective thriller. However, DiCaprio requested the script be revised in order to play Ernest Burkhart, the nephew of the villainous killer played by Robert De Niro who is torn between love and the machinations of his uncle. Paramount felt the script rewrite transformed the film from a commercial action thriller into a moody psychological drama. Consequently, Paramount empowered DiCaprio to shop the project, and the film was picked up by Apple Studios.
