- Barton Fink (1991) [W.P. Mayhew]: Decapitated (off-screen) by John Goodman; we learn of his death from a newspaper article.
- Striking Distance (1993) [Lieutenant Vincent Hardy]: Accidentally shot in the chest when his gun goes off during a struggle with his brother-in-law (Dennis Farina), as Dennis tries to stop him from shooting his nephew (Robert Pastorelli). His body is shown afterwards when his son (Bruce Willis) sees him on the stretcher, and the shooting itself is shown in a flashback towards the end of the movie as Robert explains what happened.
Television Deaths[]
- The Image (1990, TV) [Irv Mickelson]: Dies (off screen) in a plane crash. We see John posthumously in a videotape that he sent to Albert Finney before his death.
- Frasier: The Good Father (2023) [Martin Crane]: Dies (off screen) of old age and natural causes. His death is mentioned several times in the episode, which was written and filmed several years after John's real life death.
