Film Deaths[]
- Priest of Love (1981) [D. H. Lawrence]: Dies (off-screen) from complications of tuberculosis.
- Zina (1985) [Arthur Kronfeld]: Commits suicide by approaching in the German troops.
- And the Band Played On (1993) [Bill Kraus]: Dies of AIDS-related illnesses.
- The Shadow (1994) [Dr. Reinhardt Lane]: Killed (off-screen) by John Lone's men.
- Richard III (1995) [Richard III]: Shot to death by Dominic West during a battle atop a wrecked building; the movie ends with a shot of Ian smiling as he falls into the flames below.
- Apt Pupil (1998) [Kurt Dussander]: Commits suicide by blowing air into his IV tube in the hospital; he dies shortly afterwards while the doctors try to save him.
- Gods and Monsters (1998) [James Whale]: Commits suicide by drowning himself in his swimming pool. His body is shown afterwards when Brendan Fraser and Lynn Redgrave discover him.
- The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) [Gandalf]: Falls to his death from a great height after the battle with the Balrog. The means of his death are explored further in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.
- The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) [Gandalf]: Continuing the scene from the previous film, Ian is seen battling and killing the Balrog (Frank Welker), before collapsing and dying from his wounds. Following this, he is reborn as "Gandalf the White" in the process.
- The Magic Roundabout (2005) [Zebedee]: Pushed off a cliff by Tom Baker/Jon Stewart in a dream sequence; he survives the film in reality. (Ian appears in both the UK version with Tom and the US version with Jon.)
- X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014) [Magneto]: Fatally wounded by a piece of shrapnel while trying to hold off the robot Sentinels; he dies shortly after talking to Patrick Stewart. His death is later undone when the timeline is altered through the actions of Hugh Jackman, James McAvoy, and Jennifer Lawrence.
- Beauty and the Beast (2017) [Cogsworth]: Playing a majordomo turned into an anthropomorphic mantel clock, Ian becomes inanimate due to the curse taking full effect when the last rose petal falls. He is resurrected in human form when Hattie Morahan undoes the curse.
- National Theatre Live: King Lear (2018) [Lear]: Dies from old age and grief, after the death of his daughter (Anita-Joy Uwajeh). He dies while speaking to Luke Thompson and Sinead Cusack, with Sinead telling Luke to allow Ian to die in order to end his suffering.
Television Deaths[]
- Hamlet (1970) [Hamlet]: Presumably dies after being wounded with a poison-tipped sword during a duel with Tim Pigott-Smith.
- The Tragedy of King Richard II (1971) [Richard II]: Stabbed by John Cording, an assassin hired by James Laurenson.
- A Performance of Macbeth (1979) [Macbeth]: Decapitated (off-screen) in a battle with Bob Peck.
- Countdown to War (1989) [Adolf Hitler]: Commits suicide by shooting himself in the bunker.
- Rasputin: Dark Servant of Destiny (1996) [Tsar Nicholas II]: Executed, along with the rest of the royal family, by a firing squad of Bolsheviks in the basement.
- The Simpsons: The Regina Monologues (2003) [Ian McKellen]: Having already been splashed by a puddle, had an anvil dropped on his foot and repeatedly electrocuted by lightning due to 'Homer' (Dan Castellaneta) and himself using the word MacBeth, he is finally crushed to death by a falling marquee after 'Bart' (Nancy Cartwright) wishes him good luck, with Ian noting that this is also considered bad luck. (Played for comic effect.)
- King Lear (2008) [King Lear]: Dies of grief over the loss of his daughter (Romola Garai), as well as old age. Ian dies with Ben Meyjes trying to revive him, only for Jonathan Hyde insisting that they allow Ian to die in peace.
- Family Guy: Send in Stewie, Please (2018) [Dr. Cecil Pritchfield]: Dies from a heart attack, while desperately begging 'Stewie' (Seth MacFarlane) to give him his heart medication, which Seth refuses to do, in order to ensure that all the secrets Seth told to Ian remain secret. (Played for comic effect.)
