- Brie Larson was originally cast before being replaced by Jessie Buckley.
- David Thewlis and Charlie Kaufman also worked together in Anomalisa (2015).
- The young woman's critique of A Woman Under the Influence (1974) is taken verbatim from film critic Pauline Kael's review of the movie. Earlier in the film, a copy of Kael's review collection For Keeps can be seen in Jake's childhood bedroom (though ironically, that particular review does not appear in that book).
- The third Charlie Kaufman movie to be based on a book after Adaptation. (2002) and Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (2002). He did write a draft for Chaos Walking (2021) before the production of Ending Things, but eventually left that project.
- Four of the film's actors have also appeared each in a different season of Fargo (2014): Jessie Buckley as Oraetta Mayflower in season 4; David Thewlis as V.M. Varga in season 3; Jesse Plemons as Ed Blumquist in season 2; and Oliver Platt as Stavros Milos in season 1.
- The romantic comedy Jake watches didn't have a director mentioned in the script and it was the assistant editor who suggested Robert Zemeckis. Kaufman then called Zemeckis and asked for his permission to include his name which was granted. Kaufman included a thanks to Zemeckis in the end credits.
