Trivia[]

  1. The scenes with Sarah (Riley Keough) in the swimming pool are almost exact recreations of scenes from Marilyn Monroe's last film, Something's Got to Give (1962), which was never completed due to her sudden unexpected death. The footage from that film can be found online.
  2. The mansion of the songwriter is the same shooting location as the estate in The Neon Demon (2016).
  3. The film takes place in 2011. The TV news segments shown in the film refer to the date.
  4. Sam's ringtone is the track “Wastelands” by Ben Daglish from the Commodore 64 game "The Last Ninja."
  5. Sam's favorite Playboy issue is from July 1970, the cover girl is Janet Wolf photographed by Don Ornitz
  6. The scene playing at the indie film showing where Sam meets the shooting star girls is a recreation of a scene from David Robert Mitchell's first film, The Myth of the American Sleepover (2010).
  7. Dakota Johnson was cast in the lead female role but dropped out due to scheduling conflicts. Riley Keough replaced her.
  8. When Sam meets the two actresses while watching the film they are in, the actresses are revealed to be leaning on a grave stone labeled "Hitchcock". There are multiple references to Hitchcock films throughout the movie, including Rear Window (1954).
  9. While not initially a box-office success with audiences, Under the Silver Lake has garnered a cult following who are convinced that there are hidden meta-clues, codes and ciphers sprinkled throughout the film waiting to be discovered. These include references to the mystery surrounding the identity of the dog killer, various different cyphers or codes, geocoding systems, and even analysis of fireworks in the film, connecting the sound pattern they emit to Morse code. In certain scenes in the film there is graffiti that can be seen in the toilets and on a wall and which are coded with the Copiale cipher.
  10. After Sam Andrew Garfield wakes up on the couch after kids vandalized his car, his hand is stuck to an Amazing Spider-Man comic book from the table. Andrew Garfield played Spider-Man in The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) movies.
