Trivia[]

  1. Light Yagami and L are often represented as opposites, even to the point that Light uses a PC and L uses an Apple Macintosh.
  2. The theme playing at the very beginning of the pilot is a chanted variation of the prayer "Kyrie Eleison", which is Greek for "Lord have mercy."
  3. It is rumored that writer Tsugumi Ôba also sits like L while thinking about plot.
  4. L shares common points with the original manga author Tsugumi Ôba: both of them use pseudonyms. Ôba Tsugumi's real name, appearance, and gender remains unknown.
  5. L, Misa, Light and his Father are seen in Full Metal Panic!: Ejji obu hevun (2005) outside the barber shop for about 3 seconds. "L" is riding a bicycle (right to left) and "Misa" is on the standing on the right, spying on Light and his father.
  6. A picture of Light Yagami can be seen in an episode of Death Parade (2015), an anime that is made by some of the same companies that made the anime for Death Note.
  7. A live musical was written based on the manga and anime series, coming out to critical acclaim in both Japan and Korea in May 2015. Interestingly, the musical was originally written in English then translated into Japanese, but as of April 2016, no English scripts or sheet music has surfaced. An English demo album was recorded in New York City (featuring Broadway stars Jeremy Jordan as Light and Jarrod Spector as L), but the show has yet to be officially picked up by Broadway.
  8. The Death Note cannot kill a person less than 780 days old, a person over 124 years of age, a person with less than 12 minutes of life left, or a person whose death is set for a date or time that exceeds their original lifespan.
  9. L's real name is L Lawliet.
  10. Ryuk's character design is inspired by Edward Scissorhands, the protagonist from Tim Burton's film Edward Scissorhands (1990).
  11. Death Note initially began as a manga pilot one-shot chapter centered around a 13 year old boy named Taro Kagami and also had a Death Eraser in its story. This allowed a Death Note user to bring a person they killed with the notebook back to life by erasing their name.
  12. Misa Amane is a popstar whose stagename is Misa Misa. There was a popstar in the 1980's called Lisa Lisa.
  13. When asked about L's nationality, writer Tsugumi Ôba stated, "I think of him as a quarter Japanese, a quarter English, a quarter Russian and...maybe a quarter French or Italian? Something like that."
  14. Misa nicknames Aizawa Monchichi; the name of a toy that came out in Japan in 1974 and was popular in the US during the late 1980's.
  15. L dislikes socks, so much so that he's never seen wearing them in any scene.
  16. Light's last name, Yagami, is written with the Kanji for "night" and "god".
  17. Bans in Russia and China:
    • A Russian court banned Death Note on certain streaming websites, describing the series as, "potentially dangerous for modern children." The St. Petersburg court system alleged that, "Every episode contains cruelty, murder, violence." Many parents in Russia had been rallying to have the series banned since 2013 following the death of a 15 year-old girl who jumped from her 13th story apartment in Yekaterinburg leaving a suicide note behind that was near four volumes of the manga series.
    • Due to many students around the world altering real life notebooks to resemble that of a Death Note and writing names of classmates, enemies and teachers within them, China banned Death Note in many of its cities, including Beijing, over concerns that many children, teens and young adults may be influenced into committing acts of murder as a result of reading or watching the manga and anime series.
  18. In the second ending theme's credits, the name that Light is seen writing, in Japanese, in the Death Note is "Zetsubô Birî", the name of the second ending theme.
  19. Despite having genders, there are no discernible physical differences between a male and a female Shinigami and neither gender engages in sex nor is capable of reproducing.
  20. During the creation of characters Near and Mello, their designs were switched after illustrator Takeshi Obata's editor wrote the wrong names for both, unbeknownst to writer Tsugumi Ôba when he approved it, meaning that Near was originally supposed to look like Mello and vice-versa.
  21. L is often shown eating ice cream, cookies, and other sweets. Mello is almost always shown eating a candy bar that bears a resemblance to a Hershey Bar.
  22. There is a light novel prequel to the Death Note manga series titled "Death Note: Another Note - The Los Angeles BB Murder Cases" by author Nisio Isin.
  23. Both of them were avid tennis players. Light had even won the junior high championship in Japan. When L was younger, he even won a junior tennis championship in England. Light won the set they played in six games to four.
  24. SPK stands for Special Provision for Kira.
  25. It is rumored that author Tsugumi Ôba is manga artist Hiroshi Gamo, known for Tottemo! Luckyman, Bakabakashiino!, and other works that ran in Weekly Shonen Jump.
