Summary[]

Mid-19th century in Saumur on the Loire : On her birthday, the neighboring families of Eugénie Grandet (Alexandra London) pay their respects. While the cosmopolitan banker's wife Lucienne of Grassins (Claude Jade) wants to marry her son Adolphe with the young daughter of the rich cooper Grandet (Jean Carmet), Abbé Cruchot (Bernard Haller) sets his nephew to Eugénie on, because Eugenie father, a miser, has amassed a considerable fortune. This evening also appears Eugenie's handsome Cousin Charles (Jean-Claude Adelin). After the suicide of his bankrupt father he seeks the help of his uncle. As Monsieur Grandet's realisez Charles' financial situation, he sends him away. But Eugénie, who has fallen in love with her cousin, gives him all her saved money. As Father Grandet experiencing, he imprisons Eugénie and his wife (Dominique Labourier) dies of grief about it. After the death of the miser Grandet the Des Grassins and Cruchots continues to make their intrigues to marry their descendants with the heiress...

Jean Carmet [Monsieur Grandet]: after countings his gold coins he lays in bed. When Abbé Cruchot (Bernard Haller) prays beside his bed, Grandet recognizes the priest's golden cross and wants to grab it. After this gesture Grandet dies.
