Cecil Kellaway (temporarily dead) in I Married a Witch

Cecil Kellaway (1893 - 1973)

Film Deaths

  • Wuthering Heights (1939) [Mr. Earnshaw]: Dies (off-screen) of natural causes; I believe we only see a scene of his children being informed of his death. (My memory of this movie is vague.)
  • The Mummy's Tomb (1942) [Mr. Solvani]: even though he doesn't appear in this movie he presumably dies from the passage of time, from 1940 to 1970, where Dick Foran and Wallace Ford is now old men.
  • I Married a Witch (1942) [Daniel]: Executed (off-screen) by being burned at the stake; we only see the burning stake afterwards. He returns to life in the 20th century, and dies again (temporarily) when he levitates a gun and shoots himself in order to frame Fredric March for his murder. He comes back to life yet again, then is killed in a car crash when his flying car crashes into a tree; his spirit (visible as a talking puff of smoke) leaves his body and is finally sealed into a whiskey bottle by his daughter (Veronica Lake). (All played for comic effect, obviously.)
  • The Cockeyed Miracle (Mr. Griggs Returns; The Return of Mr. Griggs) (1946) [Tom Carter]: Electrocuted (off-screen) by being struck by lightning in a storm brought about by Keenan Wynn's ghost. (Thanks to Ray)
  • The Postman Always Rings Twice (1946) [Nick Smith]: Hit on the head with a bottle by John Garfield while sitting in his car; we only hear the impact. John and Lana Turner then push the car off a hillside to make it look like an accident. (We only see the outside of the car; Cecil's body is not shown.) (See also John Colicos in the 1981 version.)
  • The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms (1953) [Professor Thurgood Elson]: Devoured (off-screen) by the creature after he goes searching for it in a diving bell. We only see the creature approaching the bell; when the crew attempts to pull him back, they only get the severed line. (Thanks to Stephen)

TV Deaths

  • Johnny Ringo: The Cat (1959) [Cyrus Hampton]: Killed by the escaped tiger, we see him shoot at it and miss and then see it (stock footage) run and jump at him and hear his screams. He dies a minute later talking to Archie Duncan and Don Durant. (Thanks to Brian)
