- According to Andrew Dominik, the script contains little dialogue and he has described the film as being an "avalanche of images and events."
- Ana de Armas spent nine months trying to perfect the voice of Marilyn Monroe.
- Netflix asked the director to tone down the sexual content. Regardless, the film received an NC-17 rating for it.
- When questioned about the NC-17 rating of this film, director Andrew Dominik stated "It's a demanding film. If the audience doesn't like it, that's the f-king audience's problem. I'm not running for public office."
- Naomi Watts and Jessica Chastain were both attached to star as Marilyn Monroe at different times but both ended up dropping out.
- When the lead role was offered to Jessica Chastain, it was Brad Pitt (who is a producer on this film and co-starred with Chastain in The Tree of Life (2011) who convinced her to take the role. Chastain subsequently dropped out.
